How to use this tool

Section 8 Inspection Checklist guide

Use this checklist before the scheduled inspection to identify common deficiencies. It is a practical preparation aid and does not replace the housing authority’s current inspection standards or inspector judgment.

Inspect the entire unit

Check utilities, electrical devices, plumbing, hot water, heating, doors, windows, locks, ceilings, floors, stairs, handrails, appliances and exterior areas included with the unit. Test safety devices instead of relying on visual appearance.

Correct active hazards first

Prioritize exposed wiring, gas concerns, water leaks, missing or inoperative alarms, blocked exits, unstable stairs or rails, broken glazing and other conditions that may threaten health or safety.

Document completion

Keep dated photographs, invoices and work-order notes. Recheck repaired items before the appointment and confirm access, utilities and required appliances are available for inspection.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

Does this checklist guarantee a passing inspection?

Should utilities be on for inspection?

Typically the systems and supplied appliances must be available to test. Confirm the specific appointment instructions with the housing authority.

What happens after a failed inspection?

The authority generally identifies deficiencies and a correction deadline. Timing and payment consequences depend on the program and circumstances.
